I built this small box recently using scrap Baltic birch plywood and black walnut. Baltic birch is made up of many layers of veneer so it is very stable and why it is used in cabinet construction. If I was a shop teacher I would start students with a project like this. It features box joints which have been used for centuries in box construction. Box joints provide lots of surface area for glue which creates a very strong joint. Takes a little practice to get the set up correct but once done away you go. It teaches you why keeping the components square is so important. Hinge placement and morticing is a bit of an art to make sure all aligns well so the lid functions correctly. Working with #1 brass screws is a tedious endeavor. A proper sized pilot hole and the use of candle wax on the screws can help prevent the tiny screws heads from breaking off. Even the bottom requires stop dados so it does not get exposed through the box joints. Fun little project and these are just a few of the many ways to construct a wooden box. #woodworking
